Puerto Pollensa is, without any doubt, one of the most attractive municipalities of Mallorca island. It’s for some reason that it was one of the areas where tourism started, besides being a preferred destination of painters and artists since the beginning of this century. From the scenic point of view, Puerto Pollensa is full of contrasts, and a quite big part of the so-called “Sierra de Tramontana” with its steep mountains and its deep valleys, which in many cases end in most beautiful and lonely bays, where the blue of the sea mixes with the grey of the limestone rocks and the brilliant green of the pine trees, is situated within its municipality. In Puerto de Pollensa the cultural and artistic life never stops.

Puerto Pollensa

There are a lot of art galleries and beautiful handcraft shops. During nearly all the year one con enjoy a variety of musical events, among which the most famous ones are those that take place in the Santo Domingo Cloister. The cosmopolitan character is due to the fact that a lot of Europeans have their holiday home in Puerto Pollensa, and many live permanently in the area. Port de Pollensa is famous since many years for its outstanding beauty and its scenic variety, being the deepest and most closed bay of Mallorca. In this bay you’ll find enclaves as exclusive as Formentor. Pollensa has the best climate for nature lovers, for playing golf, nautical sports and excursions . The best hikes to make in the North Mallorca are trips to the Puig de Maria, the Castell del Rei, Vall de Ternelles and “La Atalaia de Albercutx”. Also the Formentor Peninsula offers some lovely excursions, to the mountains Na Blanca and En Fumat for Example.

Some of Pollensa's historic medieval centre remains around the Plaça Major, the main square, including the church of Nostra Senyora dels Àngels. From the outside the church is fairly austere, the sheer stone façade is pierced only by a large rose window, but the interior is highly decorative particularly during the packed Sunday morning services when it is ablaze with candles. Other than the church, the main square houses a cluster of bars and cafés, and on Sunday morning, a busy market. Just north of the square is the Via Crucis (Way of the Cross), a long stone stairway up the slope of El Calcario, bordered by ancient cypress trees. At the top of El Calvario, in a small chapel, is a much-revered statue of Mare de Déu del Peu de la Creu (Mother of God at the Foot of the Cross). On Good Friday, a figure of Jesus is slowly carried down the steps by torchlight in the Davallament (Lowering).

Like everything else in Puerto Pollensa, the scene after dark remains laid-back and quiet, visitors and locals alike taking time for the traditional 'paseo' or stroll from the marina along the Pine Walk, as far as the elegant Illa D'Or hotel. After lingering over a delicious dinner most are content to watch the world go by from a pavement café. There is entertainment offered by most of the hotels, but the main resort of Puerto Pollensa is not designed for the techno clubbing set, though there are nightclubs in neighbouring Alcudia, a few miles to the south. Pollensa old town and resort experience plenty of festivals, however, when things get lively, like on January when bonfires are lit in honour of
St Anthony, and in July when the patron saint is honoured with parades, concerts and plenty of dancing in the streets.
In February an annual carnival is held, and during the second week of November celebrations centre on the trade fair
